What to do if you have uncovered a violation

If you uncover a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy, the choice of how to respond is completely within your discretion.

However, if you choose to sanction the student in any way (even if the sanction is simply to modify the conditions of the assignment), you are required to notify the student of the violation in writing using the Online Notification System available through Campus Connect. Once logged in to Campus Connect, you will be able to access the Online Notification System through an option under "for instructors" on the left side column of your screen that reads: "Academic Integrity Violation."

Choice of sanction

The decision about a sanction for the violation is completely up to you - the professor involved has complete discretion, up to and including failing the student in the course. The faculty member could therefore reduce the grade on the assignment, fail the student on the assignment, fail the student in the course - it is your decision.

Filing a violation notice

Please login to Campus Connect and click on the "For Instructors" link on the left side column. There will be an "Academic Integrity Violation" link on the list. If you click on that link, you will find instructions for the rest of the filing process.

You may wish to prepare in advance a written description of the violation and sanction that you intend to impose. The online notification system will ask you to describe to the student the nature of the violation and then input the sanction you have chosen to impose. You simply input the text in the box provided as if you were speaking to the student and then the program will generate a letter to the student using your language and also including additional standard text that the student should know (such as the right to appeal, names of ombudspersons, and other information.).

You will then be able to review the letter, make any changes you wish; then the program will send it to the student.

You are advised to make copies of everything you have evidencing the violation and then hand it back to the student. If you want to also hand to the student a copy of the notification, you may opt to do that; you will receive a copy of the letter in your emailbox.
